Election Integrity on Social Media

After reading;  Geoshawk / Election Integrity Watch No.1 , which covered Election Integrity

in 3 countries, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Senegal, each of them presenting unique challenges

and insights into how global democracy works.  The issue of misinformation and disinformation

emerged as a common enemy, threatening the integrity of the democratic process.

The role of technology, the efforts to combat misinformation, and the political dynamics at

play offer good lessons for future electoral integrity initiatives to be considered.

  Methods;

 

Buzzers:

Individuals or groups paid to spread political propaganda online It’s been an industry practice

for several years now, even during previous elections.   They focus on made-up threats, fabricated,

phony, and inflated threats to distract and confuse the public.

Tech-Savvy Propaganda;

CONTENT FILTERING PRACTICES,

Set community standards that target racist, bigoted, or other inappropriate content, control the deployment

of bots and fake accounts to amplify misleading content.   Are these companies doing enough to weed out

the prevalence of false information, fake news spread by hostile foreign powers that poison our

political conversation and divide our society?

 

Safeguarding Democracy:

 Educating the public on digital literacy will become essential  to developing  resilience

in the face of technological manipulation, identifying and describing the methods these groups use

 and counter these efforts in real time

 

Foreign Interference:

Claims of foreign interference regarding Russia and social media platforms were used to spread

vicious Russian propaganda.  Observers of previous elections claimed that Russia intervened

maliciously via disinformation networks, of course Russia has denied these claims.
