During the 1980s, a coalition of influential oil and coal groups organized, these companies were
heavily invested in the interests of the fossil fuel industry. These organizations, driven by a shared
agenda, began a denial campaign of criticism that echoed in the halls of congress, shaping the
narrative around climate science and Government action for decades.
The Global Climate Coalition, (GCC), representing corporations of the oil and coal industry and
using the industries’ support, lobbied against climate change action, and as a result influenced
climate policy debates into the present. Â As the world adapted to the emerging reality of climate
change, the GCC’s message was a campaign of doubt. These organizations played a crucial role in
opposing climate action.
